Mission:
Present healthcare consumers and providers with tools, resources, and opportunities to improve public health through health literacy.
Vision:
A future where patients and families are empowered to use resources to improve their ability to navigate the healthcare system. A future where physicians and providers of healthcare engage in the implementation of evidence-based practice at every patient encounter.
Why health literacy?
Low health literacy has been associated with increased healthcare costs, increased mortality and increased morbidity. According to the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) 2021 Health Literacy Initiative, SC has the 13th highest rate of functional illiteracy in the USA. Nationally, 90% of the United States population lack proficient health literacy skills (AALS,2003). The cost of poor health literacy is estimated between $106-$238 billion dollars of unnecessary cost.
Informed, health literate, patients, caregivers and families are key partners to improving healthy outcomes. Let's work together.
